Winter ID: bark mottled and exfoliating, twigs dark reddish-brown, pubescent, leaf scars opposite, lateral buds minute, terminal leaf buds valvate, ovoid, about 8mm long, some with forked tips; inflorescence buds garlic bulb-shaped (not as flattened as C. florida).
